Primary Packaging for Drug Storage

TOPAS® COC is a benign substrate that is biologically inert:

• Very low extractables                                        • Purity and biocompatbility
• Low water vapor transmission                       • No BPA, plasticizers or halogens
Glass-like optics                                               • Excellent moisture resistance
Heat resistant grades                                      •  High clarity, low flourescene
Chemical resistance                                        • Sterilization by common methods
• Shatter resistance vs. glass                           • Resistant to acids & alkalis
• Global regulatory compliance                         • Plant safety & cost savings

TOPAS COC
enables trends toward prefilled liquids and non-invasive drug delivery packaging. In PFS (prefilled syringes), small molecules such as proteins can show enhanced drug stability in TOPAS versus borosilicate glass. Proteins and peptides can interact with glass due to free alkali oxides and trace metals. TOPAS is the material of choice to support the shift toward non-invasive pulmonary delivery of powdered proteins.

Vial, Prefilled Syringe & Cartridge

Plastics such as PC and PET have a higher energy surface that can compromise drug storage. TOPAS cyclic olefin copolymer is very pure, with outstanding water vapor barrier, so small TOPAS containers can preserve drug potency for several years. TOPAS has low adsorption of most drug preservatives compared to other materials. TOPAS COC can be used for diluents, vaccines, oncology drugs, dermatology preparations, ophthalmic solutions, lyophilized drugs, contrast media, and emerging biotechnology compounds. TOPAS can be molded, filled, processed and sterilized in-line.

New systems utilizing TOPAS vials can address FDA particulate contamination concerns being molded, capped, and sealed in a “particulate free” environment for aseptic filling.

Clear and colored PET bottles with TOPAS COC for moisture barrier are now available from Amcor.

Safe handling of biohazardous materials is enhanced by replacing breakable glass containers with TOPAS medical polymer.
