Diagnostic Systems
More tests in less time with smaller samples at lower cost - this is the bottom line for today's diagnostic and bio-analytical systems. Tests are rarely carried out in glassware - it is too difficult to make and too expensive to maintain. Single use plastic tubes, cuvettes, multiwell plates and the “lab-on-a-chip” are now the standard.
The material selected for these applications must be bio-inert, stiff and strong, and have good resistance to the chemical environment of the laboratory. TOPAS cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) is just such a material and is the leading industry selection for clinical diagnostic and laboratory equipment. Injection molding of TOPAS COC provides a cost-effective approach to high-volume components such as tubes, cuvettes and microtiter plates. Excellent detail reproduction and chemical resistance make TOPAS resins the top choice for microfluidic applications.
In addition, TOPAS COC is uniquely suited to applications in which DNA or proteins are measured at wavelengths of 200 to 300 nm. The high UV transmission of TOPAS COC is also exploited to sterilize solutions packaged in it by irradiating through the film at a wavelength of 253.7 nm.
Property Profile:
- High moisture barrier and low moisture absorption
- High light transmission, even into the near UV range
- High stiffness and strength
- Dimensional stability
- Compliance with USP Class VI and applicable FDA & ISO regulations
- Withstands attack by polar solvents including alcohols and dimethyl sulfoxide
- Sterilization via common methods
TOPAS medical technology grades offer compliance with the appropriate USP Class VI, ISO 10993 compatibility tests and FDA requirements, and Drug and Device Master Files are active.
