The packaging market imposes a broad range of demands on the product designer. Criteria of package appeal, durability and function are all critical, and recyclability plays an increasingly important role. TOPAS® COC ethylene copolymers represent a major step forward in polymer technology, enabling package developments and enhancements that simply were not feasible before the arrival of this new resin on the packaging scene.
Metallocene catalyst technology makes it possible for TOPAS Advanced Polymers to copolymerize the olefinic monomer norbornene with ethylene, creating a copolymer with numerous properties prized in the packaging market. Also referred to as a cyclic olefin copolymer, this resin can be blended with many common packaging resins, and coextruded with virtually any resin (tie layers may be required). TOPAS® can enhance packaging materials in numerous areas, including:
• Moisture barrier (WVTR) • Controlled tear • Downgauging • Stiffness • Thermoformability • Temperature resistance • Seals • COF and blocking • Optics • Orientability • Dimensional stability • Metallization
TOPAS® ethylene copolymer resins are fully compliant with FDA and EU packaging regulations. For details of the broad FDA food contact approval for TOPAS, please refer to FDA FCN #405 at the following link: http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/opa-fcn.html. We have developed several case studies related to the use of TOPAS in the packaging market. Please click on the links below for more information on the following topics:
