Paperboard Coating
For paperboard coating, TOPAS COC can be used as a discrete layer between polyethylene (PE) layers in a three-layer structure or as a blend additive to LDPE. Also, cardboard and paper can be extrusion laminated with TOPAS COC.
For example, TOPAS COC has been integrated successfully into cardboard as a moisture barrier for a stain removing powder package. In this case, use of TOPAS COC allowed for dispensing with an additional plastic film wrapper or an inner plastic bag and therefore reduced package complexity and cost. Due to a 5 times higher moisture barrier the plastics content is kept low enough to fulfil Germany’s Green Dot criteria for environmentally friendly packaging.
COC addition in the 10 to 20% range in a blend with LDPE or HDPE reduces crystallization induced shrinkage and often greatly reduces curl especially on light weight paper stock
Property Profile:
- Excellent moisture barrier
- Curl reduction in blends
- Stiffness
- Reduction of polymer layer thickness
